Could Brendoncare Clubs help you live longer?

Regular exercise as you get older can increase your life expectancy, and the effect can be as powerful as giving up smoking, according to researchers in Norway.

Brendoncare has been promoting fitness in later life for several years through its clubs across Dorset and Hampshire. Many of Brendoncare’s clubs offer gentle exercise tailored to older participants, including Kurling, Tai Chi, Pilates, Yoga, Keep Fit and Zumba Gold.

A recent study of 5,700 men in Norway showed those doing up to three hours of exercise each week lived around five years longer than those who did no exercise. The authors, writing for the British Journal of Sports Medicine, called for more campaigns to encourage fitness in older people.

Brendoncare’s Head of Clubs Mr. Edwin Ingleton says: “We have recognised for a long time the benefit that gentle exercise has on the health and well-being of older people, and we are delighted that this research supports our work. We know from experience that people live happier and more fulfilled lives if they are able to enjoy the companionship of like-minded people, and stay mentally and physically active.”

It’s never too late to start – all of Brendoncare’s clubs welcome new members. To find a club near you, take a look at the Clubs section on our website www.brendoncare.org.uk.
