Loneliness doesn’t stop at 5pm on a Friday

Winchester-based charity The Brendoncare Foundation runs more than 85 social and friendship clubs for older people across Dorset and Hampshire. For many older people, the weekend can be the loneliest time, as many traditional services run from Monday to Friday and the charity is currently focused on launching clubs at weekends across the area.

The latest locations for weekend clubs include Havant and Romsey in Hampshire, with a Basingstoke club opening on Saturday 11 June. In Dorset, recent clubs have started in Christchurch and Hamworthy. Each club is different, based on the interests of members.

“This Saturday club is a brilliant idea, because when you are on your own, the weekend can be long and lonely. This club gives you the chance to meet other people, and we get to have a chat over a cup of tea with biscuits and cake!” Dee, club member

Edwin Ingleton is Head of Club Services at Brendoncare and says that weekend clubs are high on the charity’s list of priorities. “In a growing number of cases, older people may not have friends or family around them, and a social club breaks the cycle of loneliness that can be so debilitating to their wellbeing. Loneliness doesn’t suddenly stop at 5pm on a Friday night and that is why offering social opportunities at the weekend is so important.”

Enquiries are welcome from anyone wishing to find out more about the club, either as a member or as a volunteer to help run the club each week. Anyone interested can find out more on our Clubs page, or by telephoning the charity on 01962 852133.
