Chiltern View
Brendoncare Chiltern View Nursing Home is a specialist dementia care centre for older people in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, with considerable expertise and experience in this challenging area, all underpinned by a strong caring ethos.
Run by personable people who understand dementia and have the skills and aptitudes to look after people who suffer moderate to severe illness, Chiltern View cares for residents with Alzheimer's Disease, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and Mixed Dementias.
Before coming into the home the person is thoroughly assessed to be sure we may set up and meet all their health care needs. We understand dementia will not reverse, but we also understand that the environment may have either a positive or negative impact on the illness.
Dementia care is the most challenging of older people's illnesses, particularly as many suffer two or more chronic illnesses over and above the dementia. At Brendoncare Chiltern View we have the skills and knowledge to meet all the needs that the illness and the ageing process bring to our residents.
One major challenge is to provide the right type and amount of stimulation to people who have dementia. Too much and the person is overwhelmed, but too little and the person loses further abilities.
We recognise the importance of the person's past life. Dementia is not a new start but a continuation of life for the person. We make every effort to keep continuity in the person's life, which includes recognising important people in their life. We run a relatives group and actively support relative involvement to the degree the relative wishes. We undertake an in-depth life history to understand the person behind the symptoms of dementia.
Safety is a major issue in determining if and when a person needs residential care. We offer a secure environment that is on the ground floor with multiple access points to a secure garden. The garden overlooks the Aylesbury Vale, giving a beautiful panorama across to the Chiltern Hills.
Research is continuing into the illness of dementia. We join the DENDRON project (Oxford) in recognising the advances made to date and continually try to retain cutting edge approaches to looking after our residents. This is a learning environment where much is known and much is still to be learned.
We believe the individual to be the centre of our work and we demonstrate this in the small number of residents we take. There are 29 residents here, and this is divided between three large lounges. We don't want crowds and we make every effort to be sure the person feels a part of the social setting. We don't restrict people and manage challenge in a gentle, distracting manner that dissolves tension rather than confronting the person and building tension.
