I really enjoy volunteering. I used to volunteer at a local children’s charity for six years in a customer-facing role. I then found an admin role to help at Brendoncare, when looking at the volunteer centre. This is my eighth year now and I come into the office for approximately four hours a week. I’m proud of what I do – my role helps get volunteers for Brendoncare which in turn enriches the lives of older people by allowing them to be supported and take part in activities.
I manage my own workload and my role is to input volunteer application forms into the computer, request and input references for applicants and liaise with the homes for which the volunteering applicants have applied. During the eight years I’ve been doing this, I’ve built good relationships with the staff at the homes and at central office and the role has made me more computer literate, which is important these days.
It can be a little noisy at times (!) but it’s good to learn new skills, give back to the community and, in turn, help make a difference. To read our other Volunteer stories, please click here
