Having moved to the area two and a half years ago, I didn’t know anyone and was keen to find some part-time secretarial work. During my search, I also considered voluntary work so I headed to my local library to find out what was available.
I found the perfect opportunity – a role that made the most of my secretarial and administrative skills; responsible for updating posts on the ‘do it’ volunteering website, listing new vacancies and updating roles for clubs and homes. It’s good to know that a few hours a week can be put to good use in helping to recruit more volunteers for a very worthwhile charity.
In the few hours I’m in the office, I like helping. I meet others and I’ve gained an insight into other areas I might like to get involved with.
Looking forward, I’d be keen to go into one of the homes, perhaps have more contact with the residents – maybe as a companion – to help alleviate the loneliness of those with few friends or no family. To read our other Volunteer stories, please click here
