Brendoncare ‘s Volunteers nominated for the 2019 Gosport Volunteer Awards

The awards recognise the outstanding contribution volunteers have made in the local community. The awards will be presented at the Volunteer Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 5 June 2019 at the Jervis Gallery, St Vincent College, Gosport.

Toni Young has volunteered for the Gosport Centre for seven years. She runs the Monday Club for over 30 members. Toni really goes the extra mile in helping to improve the lives of members and provides them with an enjoyable afternoon. She has also organised outings, such as to the seaside and the steam train.

Husband and wife team, George and Ros Brown, have volunteered for the Gosport Centre for three years. They support six clubs every week, enhancing the wellbeing of around 90 members and also arrange special events, such as the Spring Swing and Halloween Night. Their outstanding efforts enable the centre to be the vibrant hub for Gosport residents.

Brendoncare’s Gosport Centre is a community hub of 18 member-led clubs which offer support to a total of 240 club members. 61 volunteers are involved in running the clubs. The Gosport Centre has an extensive choice of activity groups through the week, with 11 exercise clubs (tai chi, pilates, circuits, table tennis), cinema, singing, film, multi-activity clubs and one off events such as Never-too-late-to-date.

Brendoncare Clubs exists as a charity to champion positive, healthy ageing. It believes in a society where every older person feels valued and included in their community and where no one feels alone.  The clubs provide a friendly, fun, relaxed and supportive environment where older people can meet other club members, make friends and develop strong peer support networks.  These networks are crucial when problems more prevalent to older age occur, such as the poor health or the loss of a partner or close friend.

Samantha Agnew, Brendoncare’s Head of Clubs, said “We feel privileged to nominate these volunteers for the Gosport Volunteer Awards. They are an inspiration to our members and make a huge contribution to the success of the Gosport Centre.”
