Brendoncare’s hub in Gosport receives generous grant from Screwfix

Brendoncare’s Club Hampshire centre in Gosport has been in vital need of new heaters for a number of years. This was most noticeable in winter 2017-18 when a number of our clubs unfortunately stopped running because the building was cold, and therefore a health risk to the older people who meet at the centre for fun and friendship every week.

Whilst researching organisations who might be able to support this project, we found the Screwfix Foundation. Their website provided plenty of information about the application process and the foundation’s priorities and, because of the nature of Screwfix’s business in building work and their community focus, it seemed a good fit with the needs of the Gosport Centre.

We were fortunate to receive a grant of £5,000 which covered the majority of costs for new heaters within the main hall at the centre. For the 250+ older people who use the centre every week, this has made the centre more comfortable, safe, welcoming and warm! The seven days of activities are greatly appreciated by the members, as one woman said, “Weekends can be lonely, so a happy Saturday morning is great!

It was also brilliant to welcome Gemma from the Portsmouth store to unveil the new heaters at a recent open day at the Centre, so that she could hear about the work of the charity and meet some people who are benefitting from the warmer space.

This large grant has meant the work could be completed earlier than expected, and has started making a difference to older people in Gosport sooner! We are so grateful for the support of The Screwfix Foundation, and the local store’s involvement too.
