Charity is cooking with confidence in local store

Wimborne cooking club

Local department store Dacombes of Wimborne is supporting a new cooking club in the town. The club is the latest to be launched by charity Brendoncare Clubs, which runs over 90 clubs for those in later life across Dorset and Hampshire. The Cooking for One club is designed to support older people plan and prepare delicious and nutritious meals for themselves, even if they live alone.

Brendoncare Clubs has been running cookery demonstrations in many of its existing clubs for the last five years, but this will be the charity’s first club dedicated to cooking. The club needed regular access to a kitchen and Dacombes, a family business with over 80 years experience of trading in the area, came to the rescue, offering its show kitchen in the store. Designed by MK Interiors, the kitchen displays a full range of styles and equipment and is fully functioning, so ideal for the new cooking club.

Josie Hendrick is Brendoncare’s Club Support for the area and explained "It is our experience that many older people find cooking for themselves a challenge, especially if they are used to cooking for a family or if their partner was previously the cook in the house. These Cooking for One sessions provide practical advice about cooking for yourself and menu tips, which help to keep people healthy. Plus they are also great fun for our club members, who get to taste a range of dishes.”

As well as cooking demonstrations, members will be able to share recipes and tips, as well as enjoy cookery-themed quizzes over tea and biscuits – and whatever delicious dish has been whipped up that day!

The Cooking for One club will take place on selected Saturdays each month between 10.15am and 12.15pm at Dacombes of Wimborne, 61-63 Leigh Road, Wimborne, BH21 1AE. It launches on Saturday 9 September and will cost £3.50 per session (including refreshments).

Matthew Renaut is the Managing Director of Dacombes and explained why they decided to support the new club. “Since Dacombes of Wimborne moved into the historic building in Leigh Road, we have more space for community events. As a local firm, we are keen to support local charities and endeavours.”

Josie continued “The new club is suitable for anyone who wants to learn how to cook for one or indeed anyone with an interest in food who wants to join a friendly club with others who like cooking and eating. We are very grateful to Dacombes for providing the space for the club and hope to see lots of people from the local community at the launch on 9 September.”
