Donate to help defeat loneliness

Winchester-based charity, Brendoncare Clubs, is delighted to be taking part in the national Big Give starting this week. The Big Give Christmas Challenge is the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, which helps UK-registered charities raise funds for their cause. Since 2008, the Christmas Challenge has raised over £78 million for more than 2,500 charity projects.

Brendoncare is attempting to raise £12,500 within a week starting on Tuesday 28 November. Each pound donated will be matched by funds already pledged to the charity, so a donation of £10 will mean that Brendoncare receives £20. Therefore, all donations, whatever the size, will make a real impact. The funds raised will be used to support Brendoncare’s clubs for older people.

Over 1 million older people say they always or often feel lonely. Not only does this impact on their mental wellbeing, it can also affect physical health. One study has even compared the effects of loneliness to those of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Brendoncare provides opportunities for older people to develop new friendships, enjoy a range of activities and a reason to get out and about. Phoebe Day, Fundraising Manager for Brendoncare explained “In a growing number of cases, older people may not have friends or family around them and a social club is a great way to break the cycle of loneliness that can be so debilitating to their wellbeing.”

The Big Give Christmas Challenge runs from noon on Tuesday 28 November until noon on Tuesday 5 December and all donations need to be made online via the Big Give website. More information can be found here.
