Don’t be a stranger in Somerford

A new club is launching in Somerford to bring local older people together over board games and a slice of cake.

The Somerford Friends drop-in club is the latest group to be opened by Brendoncare Clubs, a registered charity, which runs over 90 clubs for older people across Dorset and Hampshire. Members of the new club will be able to enjoy a selection of table-top games, such as Scrabble and cards, together with refreshments. More importantly, it is an opportunity to come along and enjoy the company of other people and make new friends.

Brendoncare’s clubs provide social opportunities for older people, who may otherwise spend much of their time on their own. Much has been written lately about the affects of loneliness, but Brendoncare has been running clubs for over 10 years and knows from the feedback and comments from members how important the clubs are to people. The daughter of one member recently commented “My mother was welcomed into one of your clubs and it was a real life-saver. It gave her something to look forward to and we will always be grateful for the help of Brendoncare.”

The Somerford drop-in club will meet every Saturday from 3 February between 10.30am and 12.30pm at The Somerford Arc, 3 Southey Road, Christchurch, BH23 3EQ. It will cost £1 per session on a pay as you go basis, with tea, coffee, soup and cake available to purchase from as little as 50p. The launch session on 3 February is free of charge, so local people can come and try the club at no cost.

Brendoncare is also looking for some volunteers to help run the club. The charity is especially interested in hearing from anyone who could help with the refreshments, managing the weekly subscriptions or supporting members with the games.
