Social Saturdays coming to Alton
9th June 2017
Run by registered charity Brendoncare Clubs, the club is designed for those in later life and will provide weekly games and activities, as well as the chance to meet up with friends both old and new.
One activity which is planned and which is a firm favourite at many of Brendoncare’s other clubs is kurling. Inspired by the Olympic sport of ice curling, kurling sees teams compete to get their ‘stones’ on to a target. The stones run on ball bearings and players use a stick to push them. So, unlike with the original version, there is no bending down required, making this is an ideal game for everyone, even those with limited mobility.
Brendoncare runs a range of clubs for older people across Hampshire and Dorset. These include exercise clubs, clubs which meet in local pubs, singing groups and even a monthly film club. A selection of clubs meet at the weekends and the Alton Saturday club is the latest one to be launched by the charity.
Brendoncare’s Head of Club Services, Edwin Ingleton, said “We know from experience that people live happier and more fulfilled lives if they are able to enjoy the companionship of like-minded people, stay mentally and physically active, and mix with friends. Loneliness doesn’t suddenly stop at 5pm on a Friday night. That is why offering social opportunities at the weekend is so important, when many other services don’t run and families may be busy with other commitments.”
Launching on 24 June, the club will meet every Saturday between 2pm and 4pm in the restaurant at Brendoncare Alton, Adams Way, Alton, GU34 2UU. The weekly cost, on a pay as you go basis, is £2.50, which includes refreshments.
