Support Saturday socialising for older people

Local older person’s charity, Brendoncare Clubs, is calling for new volunteers for its weekend clubs across Hampshire and Dorset.

The charity currently runs over 90 clubs for those in later life. The clubs offer something for everyone. From clubs which meet in pubs, to table tennis and indoor kurling groups (think of ice curling without the ice and the need to bend down to play), film nights and singing groups, the clubs are designed to offer fun and friendship to older people, especially for those without family or friends living nearby and who may otherwise be lonely.

Over 20 of these clubs run at weekends and the charity needs volunteers to help run the clubs for a couple of hours each Saturday across Hampshire, including one which meets at Brendoncare Alton in Adams Way.

Samantha Agnew is Brendoncare’s Head of Club Services and explained “We know from talking to our members that weekends can be long and lonely, especially when you don’t have someone at home to talk to or family and friends living nearby. Our weekend clubs offer relaxed social opportunities at a time when many other services don’t run and families may be busy with other commitments.”

Samantha continued “Our clubs would not be able to run without the support of our amazing volunteers, who give up a little bit of time each week to make a real and tangible difference to the lives of other people.”

Volunteers support in a range of ways, including planning and leading activities, making the all-important cups of tea and coffee or by setting up the venue at the start of the club session.
