Life as an Activities Co-ordinator at our Knightwood Care Home

How important are activities?

Care home activities have a vital role to play in the health and wellbeing of residents’ lives at Brendoncare. Our activities team cater for everyone, organising an active calendar of social, lifestyle and physical events to suit all ages and abilities.

Leeanne Broyd is responsible for care home activities at Brendoncare Knightwood in Eastleigh.

“As an Activities Co-ordinator, my work varies day-to-day depending on the time of year, the hours I work and if there’s a special event coming up. I work four days a week and I try to vary the activities to help improve their physical and mental wellbeing, social skills and creativity of our residents.”

During the pandemic, most of the activities at Brenoncare Knightwood have taken place indoors, with exceptions made for walks around the grounds or filling up the bird feeders. But this doesn’t mean activities have been any less stimulating.

“On Mondays we usually host an ‘arts and crafts’ afternoon, which our residents really respond well to. Recently, we  painted coffee jars and put solar lights in them; we’re working towards having them all on display across the patio areas of our home.”

How creative is the role?

At Brendoncare, our activities co-ordinators take inspiration from the world around them. Care home activities are also planned to coincide with national events, days of celebration and anything topical that may lead to an idea that’s fun and enjoyable.

Leeanne says that a change in season often brings a more colourful approach to her work.

“Now that Spring is finally here, we’ve made a beautiful window display of greenery and tulips with butterflies. Soon, we’ll add in Easter eggs and bunnies too. At the end of March, we’ll all watch duck eggs hatch and take care of the ducklings.”

In so-called ‘normal times’, activities at Brendoncare Knightwood would usually include a weekly visit from an exercise instructor. Despite lockdown restrictions preventing non-essential or nominated visitors from entering the home, Leeanne likes to zip up her tracksuit and have a giggle with the residents once a week, before ending her fitness session with a memory game.

“Scrabble is a favourite and so are quizzes. The residents like to test their knowledge. As soon as we can venture outdoors, we’ll refresh our activities to include daisy chain-making, archery, bowls and other great outdoor activities.”

A series of outdoor barbecues are currently being planned for Brendoncare Knightwood. When the weather improves, attention naturally shifts to the great outdoors, but it’s just as important for activities co-ordinators to be with residents who prefer to stay in their rooms.

“Sometimes residents prefer a passing chat but other times they might like some help with sorting out their cupboards or drawers. Often we’ll sit down together to play a game or even do some colouring.”

How varied is the Care Home Activities Co-ordinator role?

As Leeanne reminds us, at Brendoncare, if one thing’s for certain, it’s that no two days are ever the same. We understand that variety, alongside consistent levels of care, go a long way to making a difference to the lives of older people.

“That’s what makes this job so interesting and a lot of fun. It’s great to talk with the residents and hear about their memories. In turn, they also like to hear about the staff’s memories too. Sometimes just a simple cup of tea and a good old chat is exactly what they need. At Knightwood, as with all our homes, we recognise that the little things matter just as much as the big things.”

“I love my job, I care about the residents I work with and enjoy working with the other staff in the home. Brendoncare is such a lovely place to work!”.

Brendoncare is always looking for kind and caring people to join the team across our portfolio of care homes. If you’re interested in working for Brendoncare in either a staff, bank or voluntary role, view our latest opportunities.
