If you wish to enjoy privacy and independence while still having help at hand, then you might consider extra care housing. In Brendoncare’s flats and apartments, residents live independently while still having the option to receive tailored care and support packages from a Brendoncare home nearby.

This type of accommodation is also known as extra care, assisted living or housing with care.

We offer extra care housing facilities at Old Parsonage Court, Otterbourne Hill, Knightwood, Stildon and Alton care homes.

What is extra care?

Extra care describes a form of retirement housing that is linked to or on the same site as a care home. Residents can access comprehensive care and support services 24 hours a day – including personal care, assistance with domestic tasks and maintenance. Services are personalised, and you can access as much or as little support as you need whilst remaining living independently in your own home. An alarm system links each property to the care home, giving you peace of mind in case of an emergency.

The majority of Brendoncare properties are privately owned, with the exception being Otterbourne Hill, which offers apartments for rent particularly for couples where one is living with dementia. Each site offers different services and shared facilities such as communal gardens, a restaurant, residents’ shop and hairdressing services. Residents may also be able to join in various social events and activities offered by the care home.

You should always check that the extra care housing you’re applying to provides what you need so that you or your loved one can carry on with their life as usual.

Who could benefit from Extra Care services?

Individuals move into extra care residential housing for different reasons. Maybe they would like an easy to maintain property whilst still having access to communal gardens, or perhaps they need the reassurance that comes from having help being nearby if required. Others want to be part of a friendly and supportive community whilst still living as independently as possible. Whatever the reason, already knowing the care home residents and staff should they need to move in at a later date for more specialist care, such as a respite stay, is a real bonus.

Extra care services can also be used by couples when one partner needs to be in a care home. The spouse can stay nearby while their partner gets the help and support they need, so they can remain living close to each other.
