Personal Story

Why I will be Wing Walking for Brendoncare

I started working for Brendoncare’s Fundraising and Marketing team in 2013, inspired by the plans at the time for a “Shared Care” project which meant that couples faced with a diagnosis of dementia would be able to stay together and receive the care and support both needed, rather than face the agonising decision that one of them would have to move into a care environment. I felt privileged to be a small part of those plans becoming a reality, and it is wonderful to now see recruiting underway at Otterbourne Hill.

During my time with Brendoncare, I worked with the Clubs team to help promote new and existing clubs, and saw for myself how much the clubs are valued in their local communities: a place for people to meet new friends, try different activities, enjoy a chat with cake and a cuppa, or just an excuse to get out of the house for an hour or two each week. I could well understand how the weekly or fortnightly visit to a Brendoncare club could become a lifeline.

When my husband’s job changed in 2016, we had to move away from the area, and I knew I wanted to do something special to raise money as a way of saying goodbye. I had done a Skydive years before, and loved it so much, but felt that I needed to do something a bit different, so I decided on a Wing Walk. Just one problem: there was a very strict weight limit, and I would have to lose more than four stones, when so many diets had failed in the past.

I signed up to Weightwatchers in March 2017 (other slimming clubs do exist) and having a real reason to lose weight seemed to make a big difference to my willpower. By the end of 2017, I’d lost enough to get under the Wing Walk limit and wasted no time in signing up! My Wing Walk is booked for Saturday 8th September at Chiltern Air Sports in Oxfordshire, and I’ve been fundraising in various ways throughout the year: selling homemade crafts at local fetes, making cakes and tiffin to order, sewing badges onto Cubs uniforms, helping Santa send letters to good boys and girls, and asking friends and family to sponsor me.

I now have a few weeks left, and I would love to raise £1,000 in sponsorship. I’d be grateful for any support, and I know from experience that every donation, however large or small, can help make a difference to the lives of the people who live in Brendoncare’s care homes or to the people who rely on Brendoncare’s clubs for company.
