Getting active is not just about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years.

A recent Swedish study found that physical activity is the number one contributor to longevity, adding extra years to your life – even if you don’t start exercising until your senior years. But getting active is not just about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years. You’ll not only look better when you exercise, you’ll feel sharper, more energetic, and experience a greater sense of well-being.

There are plenty of great exercises for older adults to do but unfortunately it seems that far too many people struggle to stay active. Indeed, NHS Choices notes that many over-65s spend an average of ten hours or more sitting or lying down each day… Wow!

For many older people though, the hardest part about adopting a healthy lifestyle is getting started in the first place. There are lots of ways you can keep fit: a simple walk in the park, going for a swim, getting a DVD of exercises and doing them in the comfort of your own home. You could even join a club or gym if you’re really serious. A lot of doctors will do short term referrals for those wishing to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Linking exercise to a social group or club is a great way not only to get some exercise but also to have some fun and make and meet new friends. Brendoncare clubs, we have a variety of activities on offer, ranging from yoga and pilates to ping pong and short mat bowls but a favourite in all the clubs is New Age Kurling!! Invented back in 2000 by John Bennett and based on ice curling, the game is now played worldwide in a variety of different formats. It’s a really fun inclusive game in which anybody can join.

We have around 20 dedicated clubs that play each week, and often host an annual inter-club tournament that brings members together for an afternoon of friendly competition and of course, cake!!… oh and there’s a trophy too…

As for me, well, I have dogs, I cycle and I swim, but my passion is ping pong… how about you?
