Milestone birthday celebrations at Brendoncare were the order of the day for a special WW2 veteran.
The care team at Brendoncare Meadway were on hand to make sure that May 7th was a memorable 100th birthday for Colour Sergeant Tom Cole, with a special lockdown celebration in the beautiful gardens at Brendoncare Meadway. Tom and his family enjoyed cakes provided by his daughter and granddaughter as colourful bunting and balloons helped to brighten up the day.
Tom said, “It was a lovely day and I really enjoyed sharing it with my family and the staff and friends at Meadway.”
Tom’s daughter, Alison, commented, “100 years is an incredible achievement and we are all extremely proud of Dad. The staff worked so hard to make this a memorable and special day for us, thank you”.
Tom Cole was born in Fernhurst, Sussex on 7th May 1921. After Tom left school, he worked at Shentons Solicitors as a Solicitors Clerk. He was called up by the Territorial Army to serve in the Hampshire Regiment, nicknamed the Tigers, in July 1939 and returned to the UK in the summer of 1946.
Starting as a Private during WWII, Tom worked his way up to Colour Sergeant. He fought with General Montgomery in North Africa where he became a Prisoner of War. He and some chums found an old lorry, did it up and escaped. The hardest job was pinching the fuel! He also saw service in Libya, Egypt, Syria and Palestine. He then fought in Italy in fierce battles such as the landings at Salerno and later around Monte Casino and was mentioned in dispatches.
After the war, Tom returned home to Winchester and continued working at Shentons Solicitors until he retired aged 66.
Tom moved into Brendoncare Meadway in November 2019 and says, “It’s alright living at Brendoncare and I am looked after well.”
