The Brendoncare Fleet and Crookham Welcome Club, run by Winchester based charity, Brendoncare Clubs, is delighted to be meeting virtually to give members and volunteers the opportunity to join together each week, whilst the physical club is temporarily closed.
During the Wednesday afternoon sessions, the members and volunteers have been enjoying a variety of activities including playing and listening to the ukulele, charades and book reviews. They have been sharing special stories on pieces of music they love, and reciting favourite poems and verses. There has also been a lot chat, laughter and virtual cuppas.
Sue Dee, Brendoncare Fleet and Crookham Club Volunteer, commented,
“It has been so good to be able to keep in touch with our club members during these difficult times. We have shared a lot of laughs and I have been very impressed to see how quickly they have embraced the new technology.”
Julie Edyvean, Brendoncare Locality Manager, said,
“The meetings have been the highlight of my week. It has been great to see members’ faces and it’s been lovely to find out more about them, as we have time to chat. We have a lot of laughs and cannot wait to get back to the Club, but, in the meantime, this is a lovely way to spend time together.”
Brendoncare staff are also helping members who want to join in with the virtual club, but who don’t yet have the skills, confidence with technology, or the equipment to do so. Further virtual clubs are being developed to help people connect with the outside world during this time of enforced isolation.
Brendoncare Clubs is a well established and trusted community service, offering a vital lifeline for 1,700 older people in Hampshire and Dorset, through 94 clubs across 40 locations during the week and over the weekend. The clubs are temporarily closed at present, but when running they provide a friendly, fun, relaxed and supportive environment where older people can meet other club members, make friends and develop strong peer support networks.
The Brendoncare Fleet and Crookham Welcome Club usually meets every Wednesday, 2pm-4pm, at Guide Hall, Basingbourne Road, Fleet, Hampshire, GU52 6TQ. New members and volunteers are always welcome to join in the fun.
