Brendoncare Penny’s Friendship Club Celebrates Dorothy Blackford’s 100th Birthday

Dorothy Blackford on her 100th Birthday

The Brendoncare Penny’s Friendship Club, run by Winchester based charity, Brendoncare Clubs, celebrated Dorothy Blackford’s 100th birthday last week, via a ‘street clap’ with members, volunteers and neighbours joining in.

After the clapping, they all sang Happy Birthday to Dorothy. A surprise birthday hamper filled with goodies and treats was presented to Dorothy from the Club volunteers.

Dorothy was born on 3 July 1920 in Fulham, London. During WWII she worked with her mother in the munitions factory making shells and bullets. She later worked as a bookkeeper and loved spending her free time dancing. She moved to Ferndown over 50 years ago and lives independently in her own bungalow, with some support of family and good neighbours. She has been attending Brendoncare Penny’s Friendship Club since the very first day it opened in 2007. Since then she has hardly missed any Wednesday afternoon meetings.

Dorothy Blackford had this to say,

“I had a lovely day celebrating my birthday; I really enjoyed seeing my friends from Brendoncare Penny’s Friendship Club and everyone joining in clapping and singing. It was a wonderful surprise receiving the hamper from Amy; I look forward to the goodies! I am really missing going to the Club and can’t wait for it to reopen. It is the only time I leave my home for any social interaction.”

Amy Boon, Brendoncare Penny’s Friendship Club Volunteer, said,

“Dorothy is a much loved member of Penny’s Friendship Club and we really wanted to make her birthday special for her. It was delight to see her smiling face on her 100th birthday.”
