Winchester-based charity, The Brendoncare Foundation, is pleased to announce that the Gosport Centre has been shortlisted for the Community Engagement category within the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards 2018.
The awards recognise the innovation and excellence happening throughout the not-for-profit care and support sector. The Community Engagement award celebrates the contribution a service makes to the local community.
Brendoncare’s unique Gosport Centre is a community hub of 18 member-led clubs which offer support to a total of 240 club members run by 61 volunteers. The Gosport hub has an extensive choice of activity groups through the week, with 11 exercise clubs (tai chi, pilates, circuits, table tennis), cinema, singing, film, multi-activity clubs and one off events such as Never-too-late-to-date. In addition to serving the members it also provides a great opportunity for Brendoncare volunteers who have a strong friendship team at the Gosport Centre. The centre and its 18 clubs are very much part of the local community.
Brendoncare Clubs exists as a charity to champion positive, healthy ageing. Brendoncare believes in a society where every older person feels valued and included in their community and where no one feels alone. The clubs provide a friendly, fun, relaxed and supportive environment where older people can meet other club members, make friends and develop strong peer support networks. These networks are crucial when problems more prevalent to older age occur, such as the poor health or the loss of a partner or close friend.
Samantha Agnew, Brendoncare’s Head of Clubs, said “We are delighted that our Gosport Centre has been shortlisted for this award. Our members and volunteers truly deserve this nomination; they make a huge contribution to the success of the 18 clubs. They are always keen to get involved in new events and activities and everyone helps in making new members feel welcome”.
The awards ceremony will be held on Friday 7 December 2018.
