Don Goodey, Brendoncare Weymouth Radipole Companions Club member, is approaching his 97th birthday and has been keeping busy during lockdown by painting some of the delightful buildings in and around the Weymouth area. His paintings include cottages in Osmington and Upwey, Brewery Square, St Osmund Church in Osmington and the Mill at Upwey.

Don joined the Brendoncare Weymouth Radipole Club in 2013 when he moved to Weymouth after his wife Freda passed away. Don and Freda hailed from London and having spent their honeymoon in Bournemouth and falling in love with the area, relocated and made their home in Bournemouth.

Madeline, Don’s daughter, who is also a keen painter said,

“He has always had a talent for drawing, woodwork and other creative crafts, but with a full time job as a service engineer, and two children, there wasn’t much time for painting and drawing. He now spends a lot of his time with a paintbrush in his hand!

“He really enjoys the fun atmosphere at the Brendoncare Weymouth Radipole Companions Club, and the wide variety of activities which are organised so thoughtfully each week. He has missed seeing his friends, but has had phone calls and letters which keep him in touch in these strange and difficult times.”

Don Goodey said,

“I can always see the bright side of life and I gain great pleasure from everyday events – a beautiful sunset, the nestlings in the bird box by my window, the mallard who visits the garden looking to be fed, a warm jam doughnut, the list is endless. There is always something to keep my spirits buoyant, you just have to look!”

Brendoncare Clubs, run by the Winchester based charity, is a well established and trusted community service, offering a vital lifeline for 1,700 older people in Hampshire and Dorset, through 94 clubs across 40 locations during the week and over the weekend. The clubs are temporarily closed at present, but when running they provide a friendly, fun, relaxed and supportive environment where older people can meet other club members, make friends and develop strong peer support networks.

The Brendoncare Weymouth Radipole Companions Club usually meets every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm, at St Aldhelm’s Church Centre, Spa Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT3 5EW. When the club is running, every week there is some activity, such as an entertainer, speaker, games, tea parties, outings and more.
