The club is part of registered charity Brendoncare Clubs, which runs a network of social groups for those in later life across Dorset and Hampshire. For those who may be living alone without family close by, these clubs are a real boon. Around 500,000 older people in the UK go up to a week without seeing or speaking to anyone, often leading to feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Studies into the impact of loneliness have found its effects to be similar to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and twice as bad as obesity. Brendoncare’s clubs offer hope to those who can find themselves in this position with 90% of members describing their club as very or quite important to them.
Locality Manager for Brendoncare, Cindy Walker, explained “Clubs such as Penny’s Friendship make a tangible difference to those who attend. Reaching 10 years is a tremendous achievement and we would like to thank all the volunteers, past and present, who have helped to ensure Penny’s Friendship has supported local older people since 2007.”
Penny’s Friendship meets each Wednesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Road, Ferndown, BH22 9EU. New members are always welcome, so anyone interested in finding out more about Penny’s Friendship or any of Brendoncare’s other clubs can contact the charity on 01962 852133 or by clicking here.
