Golfing ladies support local older people’s club

A local lunch club for older people has benefited from the generosity of the Romsey Golf Club ladies’ section, which has donated over £1,200.

Each year the captain of the Romsey Golf Club ladies’ section nominates a charity to support during their captaincy year. The Romsey Lunch Club, run by Brendoncare Clubs, was the choice of last year’s captain, Ruth Williams.
Brendoncare Clubs is a registered charity which runs over 90 clubs for older people across Hampshire and Dorset. With more than one million older people who are chronically lonely in the UK, clubs such as this one are an essential way of helping to defeat loneliness and social isolation. Loneliness has been seen to affect not only our mental health, but can also negatively impact on our physical wellbeing. Brendoncare’s clubs provide fun and friendship for older people, who may not otherwise have anyone to talk to or a reason to leave their home.
Ruth Williams commented “I very much care about the welfare of older people and researched on the internet for a local charity when I was asked to nominate a charity for my Ladies Captain’s Year. When I read the Brendoncare statement, I knew I had found my perfect cause. I had no idea or expectation of how much I would be able to raise and was absolutely delighted and overwhelmed to hand over a cheque for £1,272.78 to the club.”
Sandra Day, Brendoncare’s Club Support for the Romsey area, said “We are truly touched by the generosity of the Romsey Golf Club ladies’ section. The money will help fund the running costs of the club for another year and ensure that we can continue to bring fun and friendship into the lives of local older people.”
The Romsey Lunch Club meets every Tuesday in term time between 11.30am and 1pm at the Age Concern Centre, 24 Linden Road, Romsey, SO51 8DB. Anyone interested in finding out more about the club or other Brendoncare clubs can click here, contact the charity on 01962 852133 or email
