Hampshire-based charity, Brendoncare Clubs, has launched an online Italian Club ‘Benvenuti’ for Brendoncare Club members and volunteers in Hampshire and Dorset.

The regular Benvenuti Italian Club is held bi-weekly on Monday afternoons and is proving very popular with the members. It is hosted on Zoom by Cinzia, an archaeologist, anthropologist and English teacher, from her home in Rome. She learnt about Brendoncare via social media.

Cinzia said:

“I decided to volunteer for Brendoncare because I wanted to get involved with a charity that had so many people from a generation that has done so much for others, including people abroad. I grew up knowing how the British have helped the Italians and got very moved about this. I feel very happy to be part of the club.

“Benvenuti! means Welcome! in Italian. During the sessions we explore aspects of Italian culture, starting from two of my favourite places, Rome – where I am from, and Florence – where I’ve been working for many years. We look at art, food, music and language, and there is the chance to learn some Italian, from how to introduce yourself, to terms used in food and opera.

“The members are doing really well and have learnt some basic greetings. They have ‘visited’ an Etruscan site near Rome and found out a little about the influence of the Romans on Britain. Between sessions, members are able to practise their Italian language and learn more about the places they have ‘visited’ through a series of links and videos. I am recording some short videos on location in Rome to really bring the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the city to Brendoncare members.”

Brendoncare Club Member, Pat, said:

“I do enjoy the Italian online club, it is lovely to have a native Italian lady to teach us, who is friendly and approachable also!”

And member, Jan, added:

“I am really enjoying the club. It is very interesting and pitched just right. The links and PDF slides that Cinzia sends us are very useful and helps me practise between our online sessions. Thank you Brendoncare for providing this club.”
